I am an April Fool

I Am an April Fool

Yep, I’m an official April Fool. Today is April Fool’s Day, but the joke’s on me—because it’s also my birthday. My 50th birthday, to be exact.

🎉 Turning 50 on April Fool’s Day

But hitting the big 5-0 has me thinking. Not just about jokes, prank calls and rubber chickens, but about life. About what I’ve learned. About what I still don’t know. And about how far I’ve come in these five decades. Five decades of Lessons, Laughs, Reflections, Regrets and Foolish Fun.

50 Years = A Lot of Lessons (and Laughs)

Life has thrown its fair share of curveballs, confetti, and April Fool jokes my way. But somewhere along the ride, I picked up a few lessons worth holding onto. Some deep, some foolish, some hilarious. Here are a few that popped into my mind as I crossed into this new era:

  • Don’t wait to say the kind thing, or the funny thing, just say what you need to say.
  • Don’t stop being a kid at heart – make jokes, be happy, be silly, don’t care if people think you are childish.
  • Most of the things you worry about won’t matter in 5 years, but People matter more than things. Every. Single. Time.
  • Laughter really is medicine. Especially when you’re the punchline.
  • Faith, friends, and forgiveness will take you further than ambition and knowledge.
  • Time is weird. Sometimes 1999 feels like last year, and other times yesterday feels like 10 years ago.

🎂 An April Fool Reflecting, Not Regretting

Turning 50 isn’t about getting old. It’s about realizing how much life has already happened, and how much still lies ahead. It’s about learning to celebrate even the weird parts—like being born on a day designed for practical jokes.

So today, I’m not dreading the number. I’m owning it. I’m an April Fool, sure—but I’m also 50 years wiser, stronger, and more grateful than ever. Just 2 years ago, I was lying in a hospital awaiting Open Heart Surgery, and not knowing how that would turn out. As it turns out, I am now doing well and the surgery was a success. But I learned all these things and realized that life is short, so why not be a fool and just live the best life I can.
